Fer à Cheval, the oldest and largest soap factory in Marseille still in operation, has been listed as a Historic Monument.

An ecological approach
With 160 years of existence, Savonnerie Fer à Cheval perpetuates the method of making and saponifying Marseille soap in a cauldron according to the true “Marseillaise” method. The brand adapted the traditional soap method to create cleaning products for laundry and the home, all with an ecological approach. The flagship products: the multi-purpose spray, the concentrated detergent or the black soap. Fer à Cheval, the oldest and largest soap factory in Marseille still in operation, has been listed as a Historic Monument, like the Château d’IF, the Cité radieuse or Fort Saint Jean.

Listed as historic monument
After the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label and the initiative of an IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) for the protection of real Marseille soap, this is a new stage in the history of the factory which strives to proudly preserving the meticulous and traditional production of this flagship product of Marseille culture. And above all, a great recognition since the Historic Monument label in France makes it possible to protect buildings because of their historical, artistic or architectural interest. In Marseille, only 90 monuments have obtained registration .
