On the occasion of the “Madonnas” exhibition, the PJ Gallery of Metz presents the works of a great American photographer Joel-Peter Witkin.
Photographed as divinities
Aged 83, the American artist Joel Peter Witkin photographs women with a physique outside the traditional canons of beauty, drawing inspiration from the canvases of great painters. “Madonnas” makes us feel the light of bruised and sometimes wounded bodies of women photographed as divinities, in theatrical scenography, becoming icons of art and venerated women.

Fascinated by strange beauties
“Madonnas” brings together 15 works by the American photographer . The artist has always been fascinated by beings with strange, deformed and singular physical characteristics. His portraits are neat stagings mixed with objects in a baroque and heterogeneous assembly. The octogenarian also reverses the canons of beauty by showing all the beauty of these damaged women.

The “Madonnas” exhibition is visible at the PJ gallery in Metz until June 4, 2022.
