Located a few kilometers from Paris, the Vallée-aux-Loups offered Chateaubriand in 1807 a refuge away from the political scene which he had to leave for a time after having criticized Napoleon’s despotism. Arranging the house and the park himself, he then transformed this simple gardener’s house into a magnificent estate in which he would exercise his talents as a botanist, in a wonderful setting for his many memories, testimonies of the countries visited. House of the illustrious Classified today as “Maison des Illustres“, the house of Chateaubriand remains strongly marked by the presence of the writer.
In the dining room, the table is set, adorned with fine crockery arranged on a 19th century tablecloth and seems to be waiting for Monsieur and Madame de Chateaubriand and their guests. The authentic decorations, the double-branch staircase, the furniture, the paintings and the caryatids, but also in the English-style park, the chapel and the Velléda tower in which Chateaubriand had set up his office, plunge us into the romantic and the work of one of the greatest authors of the 19th century. To perfect their knowledge, avid readers and the simply curious can discover his greatest texts, as well as many other writings by his contemporaries, in the library of the research center, rich in more than 12,000 volumes and open to all by appointment.
