An art in constant evolution

Angelin Preljocaj, in his latest show “Gravitédefies gravity with grace and lightness, drawing on the fundamentals of dance and pure movement. Performed by 13 dancers, Gravité renews gestural writing in all its beauty. Angelin Preljocaj’s ballets, although testifying to a constant evolution of his art, appear since his beginnings borrowed from the notions of space, weight, speed, mass, like so many intuitive guiding threads. His new creation goes back to the sources of his gestural writing in order to be able to explore the law of attraction, gravitation, a phenomenon as mysterious as it is intrinsically inherent to our existence.

From Bach to Daft Punk

The eclecticism of universes and musical choices from Bach to Daft Punk – via Dimitri Shostakovich and the percussions of Iannis Xénakis – renews the mastered gestural writing of the choreographer. Thirteen performers espouse the variations of rhythm in unison, in solos, duos, trios or ensembles for the unpublished version of Boléro by Maurice Ravel.

Resolutely contemporary

Angelin Preljocaj’s choreographic work is steeped in the history of classical ballets, but is, nevertheless, resolutely contemporary. Entering the repertoire of the Paris Opera Ballet in the early 1990s, Angelin Preljocaj has been directing the Preljocaj company since 1985, upon his arrival in Aix-en-Provence, and which is based at the Pavillon Noir in Aix-en-Provence inaugurated in 2006. He is considered one of the most important choreographers, frequently combining original formal research and collaborations with many other contemporary artists from all walks of life without totally moving away from the tradition of classical ballet.
