A first collection at the Café de Flore
Chloé was founded in 1952 by Gaby Aghion, a Parisian of Egyptian origin, a dark beauty and a bohemian spirit. Rejecting the coldness and stiffness of 1950s fashion, she created soft, body-conscious garments in fine fabrics, which she called “luxury ready-to-wear“. Unique for the time, these perfectly made garments are now available in confection. In 1956, Gaby Aghion and her partner, Jacques Lenoir, had the original idea of presenting their very first collection during a breakfast at the Café de Flore; place frequented by the existentialists and committed artists of this period. In 1965 and for nearly fifteen years, Karl Lagerfeld was the main designer of the House. Under his leadership, Chloé became one of the iconic brands of the 1970s and defined the look of a generation. Jackie Kennedy and Brigitte Bardot, Maria Callas and Grace Kelly all frequent the Chloé store located in the 7th arrondissement.
Modernity and timeless chic
Women adopted this refined and subtly colored fashion, romantic and airy blouses and long flowing skirts with exclusive prints. In the 1980s, talented designers, including Martine Sitbon, perpetuated the ultra-feminine image of the House, a subtle blend of modernity and timeless chic. The luxury group Richemont bought Chloé in 1985, and allowed the brand to develop internationally. Stella McCartney arrived at Chloé in 1997. She brought youth, a new lightness to the brand. Thanks to this sexy, offbeat vision of romanticism, Chloé is once again successful. Low pants falling on the hips with long and thin legs become a “must-have”.
