The history of the Cartier house dates back to the 19th century. Founded by Louis-François Cartier in 1847 in Paris, the company began as a jewelry and watch workshop. However, it wasn’t until his grandson, Louis , took over the reins of the company in the late 19th century that the brand began to take off.

1. The first men’s wristwatch : Louis Cartier, grandson of the brand’s founder, is credited with popularizing the men’s wristwatch in the early 20th century. Before that, pocket watches were the norm for men. In 1904, he designed a wristwatch for his friend, Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who wanted a practical watch during his flights. This led to the creation of the Santos watch, one of the brand’s icons.
2. The Cartier panthers : The panther has become one of the emblematic symbols of Cartier. In 1914, Louis Cartier designed the first wristwatch in the shape of a panther, given to the brand’s muse, Jeanne Toussaint. Since then, panthers have been a recurring motif in the brand’s designs, symbolizing power, grace and elegance.
