From Diderot to Robespierre
Founded in 1686 by an ambitious young Sicilian, Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli, Le Procope very quickly became the meeting place for the greatest writers. Its flamboyant decoration, its location in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the quality of its cuisine attracted – among other talents – Diderot, Voltaire, Musset and Verlaine.

During the turbulent hours of the French Revolution, it was a gathering place for fiery orators. The brewery retains traces of this tumultuous past, as evidenced by the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 1789 inscribed on the walls of one of the rooms.
Later, Benjamin Franklin and Napoleon frequented this establishment in the 6th arrondissement. The latter even left a hat there that you can admire in the entrance !
Perpetuating this reputation as a place popular with “All-Paris”, Le Procope is to this day still very popular with political, artistic and media personalities.
