From June 7 to September 3, 2023, the 6th edition of the festival dedicated to women photographers is taking place in Houlgate. Les Femmes s’exposent’s mission is to support, promote and reward female photographers, who are still overshadowed by their male colleagues and underrepresented in cultural programming. From documentaries to portraits, all areas are represented. Socio-economic inequalities, global warming, aging society, cultural changes, intimate and identity questions are all subjects in the sights of professional photographers exhibited in Normandy. Aware of the challenges that artificial intelligence poses to the profession, the Normandy festival has made creativity and relevance the watchwords of its 2023 selection exhibited outdoors. During its opening weekend, the festival rewarded Natalya Saprunova and Kamila K Stanley, winners of the two prizes valuing the work of women photographers.

14 exhibitions in the city

The 14 exhibitions of the festival offer a wealth and a variety of perspectives on today’s world and the issues it encounters. Starting with climate change and its social impact which will be highlighted, in particular thanks to Adrienne Surprenant who worked on Mount Kenya, one of the first massifs to completely lose its glaciers, and its painful consequences for the population, but also thanks to Isabelle Serro who is interested in the final destination of the clothes deposited in the recycling bins: Ghana, a country that has become an open-air “clothes trash can”. These issues can also be read in the work of Margaux Senlis who evokes the difficult practice of contemporary beekeeping and the disappearance of bees, but also of Sanne Derks who highlights the “inventiveness” of the Cuban population in dealing with the daily challenges related to water. An exhibition is dedicated to the work of Iranian photojournalist Forough Alaei. Committed to her compatriots, the latter takes part in their heroic struggle against conservatism and male domination. Previously rewarded for its series dedicated to women football supporters, Forough Alaei this time honors in Houlgate the courage of Iranian women united behind the slogan “ Woman, Life, Freedom ” Women expose themselves City of Houlgate
