Jean-Paul Gaultier is the guest of the Cinémathèque of Paris for a major exhibition, Cinémode, from October 6, 2021 to January 16, 2022. An exhibition around cinema outfits, which the fashion designer has produced for legendary movies !
The history of cinema
“CinéMode par Jean-Paul Gauthier” is the exhibition programmed by the Cinémathèque française, in the fall of 2021. From October 6, 2021 to January 16, 2022, Jean-Paul Gauthier, curator, stylist and cinephile, proposes to tell its history of cinema . Costume designer for the films of Pedro Almodovar or Luc Besson, Jean-Paul Gauthier imagined a journey, far from the beaten track, where fashion and cinema meet. An exceptional opportunity to admire the dresses of Marylin Monroe, the tuxedo of James Bond, or the leotard of Superman! Throughout the visit, we discover the greatest masterpieces of cinema echoing the outfits worn by models. Through the exhibition, we discover a facet that we did not know about the creator!

Dresses of cinema’s icons
Obviously, Jean-Paul Gaultier has also worked with the greatest filmmakers such as Luc Besson or William Klein. We discover the outfits he has specially designed for the cinema, and in particular the futuristic jumpsuit from the movie The Fifth Element. Luc Besson gave free rein to Jean-Paul Gaultier, as we can see with the preparatory models on display: impressive and atypical creations! The final piece of the exhibition allows you to admire the dresses of cinema icons as well as fashion such as Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn. Gaultier thus highlights the fact that many actresses have also been models. The exhibition could not end without the staging of a fashion show, necessarily frozen, with black plastic mannequins arranged on a platform. Everything is energized by the projection, above the stage, of sequences of fashion shows from movies from different eras.
