The 2022 edition of the Angoulême Festival rewarded Marcello Quintanilha, a tireless chronicler of Brazilian life.
The life of a nurse in a favela
Marcello Quintanilha won, on Saturday March 19, the Fauve d’or with “Ecoute, jolie Marcia” (editions Here and There). This graphic novel depicts the life of a nurse in a chaotic Rio favela. Important author of the contemporary Brazilian scene. His new opus, published by Éditions ça et là, is a tragicomedy against a backdrop of urban violence. This comic tells the story of Márcia, a respected and seasoned nurse in a hospital in the Rio region, who lives in a favela with her companion Aluisio and her daughter Jaqueline, whom she had very young with another man. Jaqueline is frivolous and loud-mouthed, and makes life difficult for her mother. Much to Márcia’s dismay, her daughter hangs out with members of a neighborhood gang and relations become very strained between the two women. Marcia then asks Aluisio to watch Jaqueline, but he risks a lot…
